In Wigan’s Springfield area, where chances to simply “bump into” one another feel increasingly rare, one local initiative is bringing that sense of connection back to the heart of the community.
On the corner of Park Road, CommUnity Corner has become a warm, welcoming space where people can come together, try something new, or simply enjoy a chat over a brew. Built on the idea that everyone deserves a place to feel they belong, it’s quickly grown into a hub of creativity, support, and community spirit.
At the centre of it all is their much-loved Public Living Room (PLR), a relaxed, open space where anyone can drop in, sit down, and connect with others. Whether you’re looking for conversation or just a friendly face, the kettle is always on.
But CommUnity Corner is much more than just a place to meet. A wide range of regular weekly and monthly activities bring people together through shared interests, including creative writing, local history and art sessions. What makes it truly special is how it encourages people to shape the space themselves, turning passions into projects. That’s exactly how initiatives like the Lego Club and Bereavement Support Group have come to life, offering both creativity and comfort to those who need it.
The team has also organised larger events that bring the wider community together, from a summer food festival to a party in the park, all designed to celebrate the people and spirit of the area.
Now, they’re building on that momentum with the return of their CommUnity Art Exhibition. Following the success of last year’s event, this year’s exhibition is set to be even bigger, with over 20 local artists taking part, nearly double the number from before.
Many of the artists are based in or connected to Springfield, Beech Hill and Gidlow, making it a true celebration of local talent.
The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday 25th April and Sunday 26th April from 12pm to 5pm, with not just artwork on display but also entertainment planned throughout the day.
If you’ve never visited before, there’s no better time to pop in, meet the team and see what it’s all about. The Public Living Room is open Monday to Friday, 11am to 3pm, and every other Sunday, and you’ll always be met with a friendly welcome.
CommUnity Corner is a shining example of what can happen when people come together to support each other, a true gem and another example of what makes Wigan special.
