Daffodils Dreams – Wigan’s Heartfelt Lifeline

At the heart of Wigan’s community, Daffodils Dreams has become a shining example of how compassion and local spirit can make a real difference.

Founded by Maureen Holcroft in 2019, it was born out of a deep commitment to tackle child poverty and hardship right here in Wigan.

It began when Maureen saw a local news article article revealing that almost half of Wigan’s children were living below the poverty line:

Maureen told us: “This jolted me. I began reflecting on the everyday comforts and support my family and friends enjoy, things we often take for granted.

“Realising this stark contrast, I felt an immediate urge to help and Daffodils Dreams was born.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams and experience a brighter future”.

Since its inception, Daffodils Dreams has grown into a powerful force of community and compassion.

It started with the simple aim of offering essential items—clothing, bedding, toiletries, and school supplies—to children and families struggling to get by.

Over the years, it has blossomed into much more, with a Pre-Loved Boutique and Community Lounge based at 87-89 Wallgate, Wigan. This space not only helps raise funds through donated goods but also acts as a hub for community events, workshops, and social connection.

One of Daffodils Dreams standout initiatives is its annual Christmas Appeal, which delivers Christmas Eve boxes packed with gifts, treats, and essentials to hundreds of children across Wigan and Leigh.

In 2024 alone, over a thousand children received these boxes, spreading festive cheer and comfort to families during difficult times.

Daffodils Dreams thrives thanks to the generosity of local businesses who share their passion for giving back. From donations of goods and services to sponsorship of events and fundraising activities, these partnerships are crucial in keeping its wheels turning.

The organisation also collaborates with organisations such as Wigan Council, Greenmount Projects, and The Brick Community Stadium to widen its reach and deepen its impact. These alliances help ensure families get the help they need—not just in emergencies but through ongoing support.

Beyond practical aid, Daffodils Dreams fosters community spirit with events like ladies’ nights, summer balls, teddy bear hunts , hikes, and personalised shopping trips for care homes, bringing joy and inclusion to people from all walks of life..

Every child deserves a fair start in life, no matter their background or their parents’ financial situation. At Daffodils Dreams, we believe in equal opportunities for all children. Whether it’s at home, school, or play, we want every child to get the chance they deserve.

Maureen: a force of nature

The first time I met Maureen was at the Daffodils Dreams boutique, and within minutes I knew she was something special. She greeted me with the biggest smile, full of energy and ideas, and it was obvious she had this unstoppable drive to help children and families in our town.

Since then, I’ve got to know her better, and I’ve seen first-hand the difference she makes — not just through the charity, but in the way she lights up a room and inspires everyone around her.

The volunteers who work alongside her are just as amazing, giving their time, love, and energy to keep things running.

Together, they’ve created something truly special for Wigan, and it’s impossible not to be moved by the impact they have.
