An eight-year-old girl from Hindley has taken matters into her own hands to help protect local wildlife and keep her community clean.
Evie Cunniffe loves animals and her local area. Her dad Matthew says she’s been asking for months to go litter picking to stop wildlife and pets from being harmed by rubbish.
“One of her real pet hates is litter,” Matthew said. “She’s pestered me for ages to go litter picking. She said she doesn’t want any puppies, dogs or other animals to get ill or die from eating litter.”
Wanting to support his daughter, Matthew contacted Wigan Council to request litter picking equipment, but while waiting for a reply, decided to take the initiative himself by buying litter pickers and using bin bags from a helpful neighbour.
On Saturday, 11th October, the pair set off around their estate, collecting a full bag of rubbish and leaving the area looking noticeably cleaner. Matthew said his daughter was delighted to see the difference they had made.
“She was so proud,” he said. “She loves where she lives, and she’s got such a kind heart. She really cares about animals and her local community. For an eight-year-old to have that level of awareness and drive is amazing.”
Matthew hopes their story will encourage other families in Wigan to get involved in keeping their neighbourhoods tidy.
“It doesn’t take much,” he added. “Just a bit of time, a few bin bags, and a positive attitude. If everyone did a little bit, we’d all be living in a cleaner, safer place for people and animals alike.”.
