Wigan & Leigh Hospice to be given star on Wigan’s ‘walk of fame’

Wigan & Leigh Hospice has been honoured with a Believe Star, the highest accolade awarded to residents and organisations across Wigan Borough.

At a ceremony held at Wigan Town Hall this week, hospice chief executive Jo was presented with the Believe Star trophy on behalf of the organisation. The permanent star will be installed on Believe Square in Wigan in July.

Wigan & Leigh Hospice provides palliative and end-of-life care, bereavement support, specialist services and education for people and families across the borough. Its work supports thousands of local people every year and is largely funded through charitable donations, fundraising and community support.

The award recognises the vital role the hospice plays in the community, caring for patients with life-limiting illnesses and supporting their loved ones through some of the most difficult times.

The Believe Stars scheme was launched in 2012 by Wigan Council to celebrate people and organisations that have made an exceptional contribution to the area. Members of the public can submit nominations, which are then reviewed by a panel. The final decision is made each year by the leader of Wigan Council and the cabinet member for communities.

Two stars are awarded annually, one for Wigan and one for Leigh.
