Spudlad – putting the jacket potato on the map in Wigan
The humble jacket potato is enjoying a huge revival and nowhere more so than in Ashton-in-Makerfield, where Spudlad, aka Dan Ashcroft, is riding the wave of Britain’s growing love for loaded spuds.
His mobile food van, Spud Stop 410, based on Bolton Road, has become a go-to spot for hearty, home-style jacket potatoes topped with all the favourites — from cheese and beans to pulled pork, to tuna to chilli and bacon.
On Monday 14 July, that buzz turned into full-blown excitement as none other than Spudman — the viral TikTok star with over 4 million followers — paid Spudlad a surprise visit.
The result? A queue stretching along Bolton Road, some waiting up to two hours for some spud action. Crowds gathered to meet the two potato kings, snap selfies, and sample their loaded creations. For Dan, it was his busiest day yet — and a moment of well-earned recognition for the growing popularity of his business.
Dan, 25, has been quietly building a loyal following at Spud Stop 410 since he opened just over a year ago. Open most weekdays, his van serves piping hot jacket potatoes at affordable prices.
He focuses on generous portions, fast service, and big flavour — a winning combo in a time when people are looking for comfort food that doesn’t break the bank, and the reviews speak for themselves with a five star rating on Facebook.
