Lady Joan Boston: Special tribute at Wigan Warriors

A special tribute to Lady Joan Boston, wife of Sir Billy Boston is to be held at The Brick Community Stadium after her death at the age of 90.

The Boston family announced Lady Joan had died on Thursday 23 July. On Friday 24 July, there will be a minute’s silence ahead of the Wigan Warriors – St Helens derby in her memory.

Always by Billy’s side through a remarkable career, Lady Joan and Sir Billy celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary earlier this year, with a party at the stadium, which also celebrated Joan’s 9oth birthday.

Wigan Warriors officially shared the news of Joan’s death with this beautiful tribute:

“Joan was a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother and a source of quiet strength to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, dignity, and unwavering support for her family throughout her life.

The tribute went on to say:

“As the wife of one of Rugby League’s greatest figures, Joan stood beside Sir Billy Boston with grace and loyalty through the many chapters of his extraordinary life and career.

“While Billy’s achievements were celebrated publicly, Joan’s steadfast presence, love, and encouragement were at the heart of their family life. She was deeply admired by those closest to her and cherished for her generosity of spirit and gentle nature.

“Above all, Joan’s greatest pride was her family. She created a home filled with love, care, and compassion, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

“She leaves behind her devoted husband, Sir Billy Boston, along with her family and many friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.

“Everyone at Wigan Warriors send their deepest condolences to Sir Billy Boston and the Boston family.”

I would like to echo this, thoughts and condolences with the whole family. Rest in peace Lady Joan, a true lady even before she was given the title.
