10-year old Local Hero Coby receives bravery award for saving his mum’s life
A 10-year old boy from Ashton-in-Makerfield is set to be honoured for his incredible bravery after saving his mum’s life—not once, but twice.
On 17th May, what began as an ordinary day for Becki Velloza and her son Coby quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal. After spending the day shopping and visiting friends, they returned home.
Coby, who was 9 at the time, went upstairs to play his Xbox when he heard a loud bang.
Rushing downstairs, he found his mum unconscious and having a seizure – something Becki had never experienced before.
Despite the shock, Coby remained calm. He grabbed her phone, dialled 999, and relayed all the key details to the emergency call handler, including their names, address, and phone number.
While waiting for help, he supported his mum’s head to prevent further injury, followed the operator’s instructions, and unlocked the door for emergency services. He even managed to call his nan to explain what was happening.
Thanks to Coby’s quick thinking, Becki got the urgent care she needed.
Just weeks later, while shopping in Wigan’s Asda Becki had another seizure. Once again, Coby stayed calm, alerted store staff, and explained the situation clearly to both them and the paramedics when they arrived.
Coby’s actions have already been recognised by the North West Ambulance Service, who awarded him a certificate. Now, the community will celebrate his courage too.
During Bryn’s Big Weekender this coming weekend on Sunday 31st August, a local councillor will present Coby with a special Bravery Award in front of the crowd.
Speaking about her son, Becki said: “We are so proud and thankful for him. Everyone keeps telling us to share his story, and now he’s being recognised for what he did.
“I know I am safe with Coby, he is so protective now and will not leave my side.”
Becki is continuing to undergo tests to try and find the cause of the seizures, and Coby has continued to support her since she was discharged from hospital, proving that real heroes come in all sizes.
