Big-hearted Wigan businessman Mike Sharkey to receive Believe Star alongside The Lathums and Lottery Winners

A big-hearted Wigan businessman who has helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity will be honoured with a Believe Star alongside two of the borough’s bands.

Mike Sharkey, a leading figure behind the Team Wigan and Leigh fundraising initiative, will receive the recognition together with local music favourites The Lathums and Lottery Winners.

Mike is managing director of Greenmount Projects and one of the founders of Team Wigan and Leigh, a collaboration of businesses and community organisations dedicated to raising money for good causes.

Through large-scale charity walks and challenges, the group has helped generate hundreds of thousands of pounds for organisations including Wigan and Leigh Hospice, Daffodils Dreams CIC and The Brick.

The borough’s thriving music scene will also be recognised with Believe Stars for Wigan band The Lathums and Lottery Winners from Leigh.

Both bands have enjoyed huge success in recent years, releasing number one albums and gaining national and international recognition. The Lathums released their third studio album Matter Does Not Define in 2025, while Lottery Winners are preparing for homecoming headline shows at the Progress with Unity Stadium at Leigh Sports Village in May.

Launched in 2012, the Believe Star scheme recognises residents who have made an outstanding contribution to Wigan Borough. Previous recipients include Sir Billy Boston, actor Sir Ian McKellen, Lioness Ella Toone, Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson, heart specialist Dr Nayyar Naqvi, the man behind the puppet Hacker T.Dog,  and charities Joining Jack and Joseph’s Goal.

The stars are displayed at Believe Square in Wigan town centre and at Civic Square in Leigh, with unveiling ceremonies for the three 2026 recipients due to take place later this year.

Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux MBE, said: “We are incredibly proud of our three recipients for 2026.

“They are all outstanding ambassadors for our borough and have made such a positive difference to people’s lives.

“Believe Stars are the highest honour we can bestow in Wigan Borough and this recognition is well deserved.”

He added: “What Mike Sharkey has achieved as a leading figure within Team Wigan and Leigh over recent years is astounding.

“Their co-ordinated fundraising has meant hundreds of thousands of pounds of much-needed funding has been raised for worthy causes such as Wigan and Leigh Hospice, Daffodils Dreams and The Brick.

“It is very much a team effort, but Mike’s enthusiasm and drive is an example to us all.”
