Fish and Chips at Wallgate Chippy

Fish and Chip shops in Wigan- which is your favourite?

We all love a chippy tea whether it’s Friday or not, and luckily, in Wigan we are spoiled for choice for where we go for our babby’s yed and peawet.

Unfortunately we can’t include every single fish and chip shop on this page, so we’ve rounded five up we think are worth a visit, in no particular order.

1 – Wallgate Chippy, Wigan

Traditional Fish & Chips. Restaurant on Wallgate in Wigan town centre, opposite North Western Train station. It serves fresh fish and chips (some GIANT fish),  and also offers burgers, Kebabs and many homemade specials, which are updated on the daily specials board.  Dine in spacious restaurant split over two floors, or you can have a takeaway or arrange delivery to your home or workplace. Wallgate Chippy also supplies Kittiwake Cruises with their fish and chips for their Friday ‘Chippy Tea’ cruises.

3-  The Trawlerman, Woodhouse Drive

If you’re on TikTok you might have seen The Trawlerman, with Gemma and Steve posting daily, talking about their daily routine, or Steve trying one of the various concoctions they dream up. Deep fried pie in a barm with peawet anyone?

Beyond their Tiktok  personalities though, what you get at Trawlerman is a Traditional English Fish and Chip shop, where one of the biggest sellers is the smack barm with peawet, for £1.50.

More info here.

4 – Pepper Lane Chippy, Standish

Traditional English Fish and Chips, parking, vegetarian and gluten free options, (but you have to ring through earlier if you want gluten free). Queues out the door on a Friday. Takeaway and delivery service available. (Sadly it was closed when I went on a Sunday).

More info here

📍 Pepper Lane Chippy, 4 Pepper Lane, Standish, WN6 0PX

5 – Northern Sole, Gidlow Lane

Worth a place on this list for the name alone. There is no other town in the world other than Wigan which could have a chippy called ‘Northern Sole’. Just brilliant.

The takeaway on Gidlow Lane used to be ‘Maureen’s Chippy; for years, but was taken over and rebranded by new owner Jonny Wood over a year ago. Serving fish & chips, pies, puddings burgers, chicken, sides and special gourmet dishes. Community minded, Northern Sole runs competitions on its social media pages, and delivers smaller portions to the Springfield, Beech Hill and Gidlow CommUnity group on a Wednesday.

More info here.
