Hidden tennis oasis in Wigan has been serving the town for more than a century
Many people in Wigan pass by it every day without realising it’s there.
Tucked away across from the hospital lies one of the town’s best-kept sporting secrets, Bellingham Lawn Tennis Club. Founded in 1916, the club has been part of the local sporting landscape for more than a century.
What began as a small community tennis club has grown into a welcoming and friendly place for players of all ages and abilities, while still maintaining the relaxed atmosphere that has made it special for generations. Today, the club offers excellent facilities including six modern Astroturf courts (four of them floodlit) and three additional floodlit tarmac courts for players looking to improve their game.
Off the court, members can enjoy a modern clubhouse with changing rooms and a function room that is available for private hire.
Despite its long history, many local residents are surprised to discover the club hidden away among greenery just minutes from the town centre.
It’s a peaceful setting where tennis, community, and friendship come together. One of the things that members value most about Bellingham is the strong social side of the club with regular social tennis sessions run throughout the week which are open to players of all standards, making it easy for new members to meet people and get involved.
If you are a more seasoned player it hosts LTA tournaments and participates in several leagues; the Bellingham 1st team plays at a very high level, but the club prides itself on offering a welcoming environment for players of all standards.
