Howards Shades: a Wigan success story built on hard work and heart

As we all know, Wigan is a town where people look out for each other. Neighbours help neighbours, businesses step in to support the town, and everyone chips in when it’s needed. Arron and Kate Howard know this well.

Their company, Howards Shades in Pemberton has grown from years of experience and a passion for quality, but it’s also built on giving back to the town that’s shaped them.

This is their story, in their words…

“We spent over ten years at Signature Blinds in Pemberton, which people will remember as Harmony Blinds before it rebranded. Arron started in 2011, and from the beginning it was all about learning the trade properly.

“That meant travelling. Ireland, Germany, Scotland, Derby, Winchester, Leeds, Huddersfield, Manchester, you name it. Every trip taught us something new, and we brought that knowledge back to Wigan. It was not about rushing, it was about mastering the craft. Arron always says, “Every day is a school day.” And that is true. There is always something new to learn, and that mindset drives everything we do at Howards Shades.

“Starting our own business came after years of experience. We wanted our name on the door and our work to speak for itself. Quality, reliability, and customer care are everything to us.

“Every home is treated as if it is our own, every customer as if they were family.”

Beyond business, Arron, Kate and Howards Shades are deeply committed to giving back.

They proudly sponsor Orrell St James Amateur Rugby League Club, where they support both the pitch and the team kits, making sure young players have the gear they need to thrive. They also sponsor children through social media, recognising how important that visibility can be for families and clubs.

They are equally proud to sponsor The Lion’s Den, a well-known gym in Wigan. Kate, being a personal trainer at Shevington Gym, understands that fitness is about more than just the body, saying: “It is a vital lifeline for mental health and social wellbeing, especially in a town where many people are facing challenges.

“At a time when so many are looking for a positive outlet, Howards Shades is proud to help provide that.”

As the business grows, Arron and Kate promise that giving back will always stay at the core of what they do. In their words: “Every day is a school day, and every step forward is a chance to make Wigan stronger.”
