Josh Simons to step step down as Makerfield MP- opening the door for Andy Burnham’s return to Westminster
Wigan it set to be at the epicentre of British politics for the next few weeks, with the news Makerfield MP Josh Simons has announced he’s stepping down, and it could clear the way for Andy Burnham to make a return to Parliament.
The move has already sparked huge speculation that the Mayor of Greater Manchester could be preparing for a future Labour leadership bid, with some even tipping him as a potential future Prime Minister.
Burnham, who was previously MP for neighbouring Leigh before becoming Mayor of Greater Manchester, is expected to stand in the upcoming Makerfield by-election if approved by Labour officials.
Josh Simons said he was stepping aside because he believes Burnham is the right person to help “reconnect Labour with working people” at a time when the party is facing growing pressure nationally.
For people across Wigan borough, Burnham is already a familiar face. Despite representing Leigh in Parliament in the past, he’s remained heavily involved across Greater Manchester during his time as mayor, particularly on transport, policing, housing and the ongoing fight for more powers and funding for the North.
