A family fun day is being organised in Wigan to raise money for Sonia Hughes, the much-loved Scholes mum who was recently told her cancer has returned and is now terminal.
The “Standing with Sonia – Family Fun Day” will take place at St Patrick’s ARLFC on Saturday, July 11, bringing together families, local businesses, entertainers and community groups in support of Sonia and her family.
The event follows an outpouring of support for the 46-year-old after she shared her story publicly. Sonia was first diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last year and, after initially responding well to treatment, was recently given the devastating news that the cancer had returned and spread to her liver.
Friends and supporters are now hoping to raise funds to help Sonia fulfil some of her wishes and create special memories with her family and friends.
The family-friendly event will begin at 11am and will feature a range of entertainment and activities, including a live DJ, local singers, children’s entertainment, a bouncy castle, fairground rides, stalls, food and drinks.
Organisers say the day is about more than fundraising, with the event also aiming to bring the community together in support of Sonia and her loved ones during an incredibly difficult time.
Tickets are priced at £3 per person, with proceeds going towards helping Sonia make lasting memories with the people she loves. Businesses, charities and community groups are also being invited to get involved. Stall pitches are available for £20, and organisers are encouraging local traders and organisations to take part.
Singers and performers are also being sought to entertain visitors throughout the day, with solo artists, duos and groups all welcome.
