Three men and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon following reports of a group with a crossbow, shouting at passing cars in the Norley Hall area of Wigan.
The incident was reported to police at 9.21am on Thursday 11 December, with officers arriving at the scene within eight minutes. The police helicopter was also spotted over the area.
By 10:08am, the four were detained at a nearby address by the Specialist Operations Unit, and a crossbow was recovered.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the weapon was not discharged and no injuries have been reported.
All four suspects were taken into custody, where they remain for further questioning.
As a precaution, several local schools briefly went into lockdown while officers responded. Police said there was no direct threat to pupils, and all schools later reopened.
Neighbourhood Inspector Sam Davies said: “This was an isolated incident that poses no ongoing risk to the community. We understand this caused concern, and officers will remain visible in the area and visit affected schools today to provide reassurance.
