Orrell Scarecrow Trail is back this month, promising weeks of creativity, colour, and community spirit.
Following last year’s huge success, the Brighter Better Orrell community group is inviting everyone — from pubs, businesses and schools to nurseries, churches and households — to take part.
There’s no set theme and no strict rules.
Whether you choose a classic straw-filled figure or a design inspired by films, fairy tales, pop culture or local legends, it’s all about imagination and fun, with the main aim of spreading positivity.
Scarecrows will start appearing around Orrell and Billinge from 22nd August, with judging after 6th September.
A downloadable map will guide visitors along the trail, making it a perfect late-summer activity for families and friends.
If you want to make your own scarecrow, Brighter Better Orrell has given out some handy tips:
Start with a sturdy base such as wooden stakes or bamboo poles.
Use old clothes, hats, and scarves to give your scarecrow style.
Stuff the body with straw, newspaper, or any materials you have to hand.
Add a friendly face — painted, sewn, or drawn — and don’t forget a big smile.
Give your scarecrow a name to add personality.

I’ve had a quick look at the trail… 30 scarecrows on it so far, from in people’s gardens, to businesses including the Copper Tap, The Little Green Platter Company, Raj Gate, Orrell Train Station, St Peter’s (my old school) and many more!

I just love this to be honest, it’s a brilliant activity for everyone, whether you’re making a scarecrow, or walking around the trail ticking all the scarecrows off on your map.
It’s actually made me slightly upset I don’t live on that side of the M6 bridge anymore.. I grew up on Vicarage Road, so am tempted to go and put a scarecrow in my mum’s garden.
