Wigan and Leigh College has been named as one of only 10 in England to become a ‘construction technical excellence college’ (TEC).
The college will be part of a £100m plan to equip more than 40,000 future builders, bricklayers, electricians, carpenters and plumbers with essential skills for the construction industry under plans announced by the Government.
The Government says the move will allow the construction industry to draw on homegrown, British talent in the years to come rather than relying on overseas workers, ‘backing the British working class with well-paid, high-skilled job opportunities’..
Specialist colleges will be in every region of England to deliver the workforce needed and with Wigan & Leigh College will support the delivery of construction skills across the region.
It will be working with partners to ensure that all learners can access local, high quality construction training.
College Principal Anna Dawe said: “We are very proud to be named as the Construction Technical Excellence College (CTEC) for the north-west.
“It is a testament to the work undertaken by our construction staff and students”.
Anna continued: “Wigan borough now has double the national rate of employment in the construction sector, and construction is pivotal to the economy of Wigan Borough, GM and the wider region.
The CTEC programme is a real opportunity to provide a strong, co-ordinated response to the skills challenges facing the sector.”
